An EASA safety plan modernizes the industry
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) is introducing a new five-year safety plan that supports the modernization of the European Aviation System in safety, efficiency, and the protection of the environment. The plan also addresses global issues that have emerged from the Covid Pandemic and working on a European digital license system.
Everything is going digital; why not our licenses and medical certificates too? I’m sure I’m not the only one who has had a momentary panic attack when I can’t find my wallet on a trip, but it’s a good bet that none of us will take off without our iPads or our phones. Once the digital license system framework is developed, it will enable both flight and medical examiners to update and validate certificates in real-time. It will also prevent fraudulent or forged licenses and provide unparalleled safety measures for the industry.
The safety plan includes 19 new high-tech research products, including remote flight instruction, machine learning in certification, electric and hybrid propulsion, digital transformation, and my personal favorite, risk assessment of complex systems. I like that they acknowledge that high-tech complex systems may appear simple to the user, but still carry risks.
I hope the FAA can keep up with the EASA and its safety plan. The way technology is advancing at record speeds, we may soon have no choice.
